Chimney Service Company 130 Spring Drive Roswell, Georgia 30075 770-992-9565
Hello, I’m Jim McPherson with the Chimney Service Company. I’m nationally certified, I’m insured, I’m a member of the chimney sweep guild, and I’m the one who does the work. Please feel free to call me with any questions you have about your fireplace or any of the services I provide. Thanks!
CHIMNEY CLEANING Chimneys need to be cleaned to remove creosote that builds up from burning wood in the fireplace. The basic process takes about an hour. I put a tarp down in front of the fireplace to protect the carpet and bring in some tools and a high efficiency vacuum to control the dust. After cleaning out the chimney, the damper area, the fireplace and the gas log lighter I look things over for safety problems. Then I get up on the roof to check the top of the chimney. If I spot a problem I’ll get a Polaroid photo of it so you can see for yourself.
MASONRY CHIMNEY REPAIRS I repair fireplaces, brickwork and mortar crowns. I reline chimneys with UL approved stainless steel liners and a lightweight cast in place concrete mix. I install dampers and chimney caps. I diagnose and fix leaks, smoking problems and odor situations. I remove birds and animals.
PRE-FAB FIREPLACE REPAIRS I can repair or replace cracked ceramic panels in a pre-fab fireplace. I repair and replace pre-fab rain pans.
LEAKING PROBLEMS DIAGNOSED AND FIXED I repair leaks. With any leak the most important thing to do first is to accurately diagnose exactly where the leak is. It does no good to do a great repair on the wrong thing! If the cause of the leak is not obvious I use a garden hose to test different areas one at a time. Consider; a leak might be in the roof, the flashing, the siding, the gutters, the brickwork, the rain pan, the mortar crown, or the chimney cap. In addition to these repairs I also carry spray on waterproofing products designed for chimney applications.
PRE-FAB RAIN PAN REPAIRS Pre-fab (factory made) fireplace and chimney systems are subject to leaking, especially around the rain pan. The rain pan is a large sheet of galvanized steel which covers the top of the chimney chase (the chimney-shaped box around the pipe). Rain pans can suffer rust damage, especially if they are pushed down in the middle and holding rainwater. I can repair or replace a rain pan as needed. I install support braces to hold the rain pan up and apply a protective coating to prevent rust. I give a five-year warranty on all new rain pans I install.
FIREPLACE SMOKING PROBLEMS During my 20 years in business I have diagnosed and corrected many smoking fireplaces. I can smoke test a fireplace for function. Frequently the corrective action is not expensive. While I’m there I’ll be happy to advise you about using you fireplace most efficiently.
CHIMNEY CAPS There are different types and sizes of chimney caps available. Chimney caps have a solid top to keep rain out of the flue opening and screening around the sides to keep birds and squirrels out. The caps I carry in the truck are all stainless steel, which won’t rust or stain your chimney.
DAMPERS The damper opens and closes the fireplace to the outside. A damper’s main function is to close off the outside air when the fireplace is not being used so you don’t lose energy. Leaving your damper open is like leaving a window open. A damper will generally pay for itself rather quickly in energy savings.
BIRD AND ANIMAL RESCUE Critters have a way of getting into chimneys. In the springtime chimney swifts will nest in uncapped chimneys and raise their young. These beneficial birds are noisy but harmless. The droppings they leave behind are another matter though. If you hear fluttering in your chimney, please call me about it. I can advise you how to avoid harming the birds and how I can clean things up and prevent them from moving back in next year by installing a chimney cap. Squirrels can fall down inside a chimney, get stuck and die, sometimes causing major odor problems. Worse yet, if they get in the house they can cause damage in their efforts to escape. This is another reason to keep the damper shut and have a cap on top of the chimney. They can also get into the attic and flatten out the insulation.
INSPECTIONS AND REPAIRS FOR REAL ESTATE SALES Over the years I have developed good relations with many real estate professionals. Often I am called in for a “second opinion” when another company has claimed there are major problems with a chimney. Sometimes they are correct and sometimes not.
BLOCKED FURNACE AND DRYER VENT CLEANING I can inspect your furnace and water heater to see if carbon monoxide fumes are being released into your home. I also work on blocked dryer ducts.
QUESTIONS? Please call. I’ll be happy to discuss your situation with you. If I can help, I’ll try to give you a good idea in advance how much a service is likely to cost. If not, I will refer you to someone else if I can.
